JOIN THOUSANDS OF CANADIANS IN THE SECOND ANNUAL WALK TO FIGHT ARTHRITIS

April 26, 2011, TORONTO, ON – It’s time to get walking! On Sunday, May 15, thousands of people in 24 communities across Canada will come together for The Arthritis Society’s Walk To Fight Arthritis, presented by the makers of TYLENOL®. All proceeds will be invested in vital arthritis research and programs for people living with arthritis.

“Last year’s inaugural walk was an outstanding success – in fact, we had more than 3,000 people raise close to $1 million to fight arthritis,” says Steven McNair, President and CEO, The Arthritis Society. “This year’s Walk promises to be even more successful. Every little piece of support brings us closer to our ultimate goal of finding a cure.”

In addition to walking and raising funds through pledging, Canadians are encouraged to visit www.WalkToFightArthritis.ca to share their personal story of living with arthritis. Governor General to Speak at Gairdner Foundation Annual Awards Dinner Thursday

Toronto, ON (October 25, 2010) – On October 28, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will attend the Gairdner Foundation Annual Awards Dinner in Toronto, an event recognizing the achievements of cutting-edge medical researchers.

During the gala, His Excellency will deliver a keynote address on the important leadership role taken by the Gairdner Foundation in recognizing innovative medical research. Following the keynote address, His Excellency will present Dr. Cal Stiller with the Canada Gairdner Wightman Award. Also to be recognized by the Gairdner Foundation: Dr. Nick White, winner of the Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, and Dr. Gregg Semenza, Dr. Peter Ratcliffe, Dr. Pierre Chambon, Dr. William Catterall and Dr. William Kaelin, each winners of the Canada Gairdner International Award.

Value Village Celebrates 250th Store Opening

Starbucks Encourages Canadians to Pledge to do some Green

Starbucks Canada is asking Canadians to join them to Pledge to do some Green this summer as part of the company’s support for Evergreen’s stewardship and restoration program, which brings people together with nature to restore, protect and steward public green spaces across the country.

Consumers who make a formal pledge at www.facebook.com/starbuckscanada to devote time to green their local community and inspire others to do the same will receive a free tall cup of Pike’s Place roast at participating Starbucks locations across Canada.

CNIB presents “Eye Care About Canada”

CNIB conducted a national glaucoma awareness campaign called Eye Care About Canada, thanks to an unrestricted educational grant by Pfizer. Launched to media during World Glaucoma Week (March 7-13), the campaign highlighted key findings from a CNIB survey on Canadians’ eye care, including awareness of glaucoma and the need for early detection. To complement the media launch, the public had the chance to share the places in Canada they care about the most through the Eye Care About Canada photo contest. With a dedicated website, this contest invited Canadian to upload on www.eyecareaboutcananda.ca a snapshot of their favourite landscape for a chance to win a trip to one of the country’s most beautiful destinations as voted by Canadians. The winner of this year’s contest is Philippe Ahmaranian.

97 people were screened at the clinic in Quebec City

As a second phase to the campaign, CNIB conducted free glaucoma screening clinics with CNIB during the week of June 14 in Calgary, Toronto and Quebec City. The clinics took place in local malls, where shoppers could have their eyes examined and consult with an optometrist on-site. In total, over 200 people were screened for glaucoma across the three centres.

National media relations was conducted during both phases and resulted in 95 unique media hits and over 19 million media impressions.
