ElectroRecycle, the Small Appliance & Power Tool Recycling Program, Expands in B.C.

New product categories such as power tools and exercise machines provide British Columbians a new recycling option for a wide variety of household electrical products.

Vancouver, B.C., June 20, 2012 – Starting July 1, 2012, British Columbians will be able to recycle even more of their old or broken electrical products as ElectroRecycle expands its small appliance recycling program to include new products such as  power tools, sewing machines and exercise equipment.

Introduced by the Canadian Electrical Stewardship Association (CESA), ElectroRecycle (formerly known as Unplugged) was first launched across B.C. on October 1, 2011. ElectroRecycle is the first small appliance and power tool recycling program of its kind in Canada and the only government-approved small appliance and power tool recycling program in B.C.

Excellence in Sustainable Construction Program first of its kind in North America to certify construction company, rather than project

VANCOUVER, February 23, 2012 – To promote corporate sustainability strategies in the construction sector, Vancouver Regional Construction Association has launched the Excellence in Sustainable Construction (ESC) Certification Program, one of the first of its kind in North America to certify a construction company, rather than a construction project. The aim of the Association-developed program is to encourage the three pillars of sustainability within construction companies, finding synergies between profits, protecting the environment and supporting communities.

New province-wide program provides environmentally responsible recycling option for more than two million small appliances sent to landfills every year

Vancouver, BC - On October 1st, 2011, British Columbians will be able to recycle their used or broken small appliances at over 100 convenient drop-off locations through a new and unique program called Unplugged, the small appliance recycling program. Unplugged will divert approximately two million small appliances previously destined for the landfill, helping to reduce pollution, save energy and, and protect the environment.

Starbucks Coffee Company Kicks Off Coffee Cup Recycling Across BC

April 21  — (Vancouver)  As part of an ongoing global initiative to reduce its impact on the environment, Starbucks Coffee Company, Canada today announced front of store recycling in its company owned stores across British Columbia.  The program, which is the first to accept single serve coffee cups in BC, includes the most common form of hot beverage cup, the polyethylene lined hot beverage cup.

“Our target is that by 2015 we have recycling available for our customers in all of our stores worldwide where we control waste collection and to serve 25% of beverages in reusable cups,” said Jim Hanna, director  of environmental impact, Starbucks Coffee Company.  “We also aim towards 100% of our cups being recyclable so we are excited to be closer to realizing those goals with this program being implemented across British Columbia.” (more…)

Waste Management Surpasses Goal to Support Wildlife

Company exceeds 100 certified programs and 25,000 protected acres far in advance of 2020 goal

Waste Management only company to have all of its Ontario and Quebec landfills certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council

BALTIMORE, MD — November 12, 2010 — Waste Management (NYSE: WM) today reached an environmental stewardship goal it set in 2007 by preserving over 25,000 acres of land at 103 sites across North America as protected wildlife habitat. Certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), the protected areas provide homes and breeding grounds for birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and plant species, many of them protected or endangered.

In Canada, all of the company’s landfills in Ontario and Quebec have been certified by WHC, making it the only waste management company in Canada to have this distinction. Those sites in Ontario are located in Sarnia, Petrolia, Watford, Blenheim, Napanee and Ottawa. In Quebec, the sites are located in Ste. Sophie, Drummondville and Magog.

Waste Management est la seule entreprise à obtenir une accréditation pour chacun de ses lieux d’enfouissement de l’Ontario et du Québec

LONGUEUIL, QC — 15 novembre 2010 — Waste Management (NYSE: WM) a atteint aujourd’hui l’objectif fixé en 2007 en matière de gestion responsable de l’environnement en assurant la préservation de plus de 10 000 hectares de terres répartis sur 103 sites situés aux quatre coins de l’Amérique du Nord. Accrédités par le Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), les milieux naturels protégés offrent à de nombreuses espèces d’oiseaux, de poissons, de mammifères, de reptiles, d’amphibiens et de plantes protégées ou en voie d’extinction un milieu de vie favorable à leur développement et à leur reproduction.

Au Canada, chacun des lieux d’enfouissement que l’entreprise possède en Ontario et au Québec a reçu l’accréditation du WHC. Ainsi, Waste Management est la seule entreprise de gestion des matières résiduelles à recevoir cette distinction. En Ontario, les sites accrédités sont situés à Sarnia, Petrolia, Watford, Napanee et Ottawa. Quant aux sites du Québec, en plus des trois lieux d’enfouissement technique de Sainte-Sophie, Saint-Nicéphore et Magog qui ont vu leur certification renouvelée par le WHC cette année, le poste de transbordement de déchets de Valleyfield a également reçu une certification pour son programme de conservation des habitats naturels.

Inauguration du CFER des chênes : un bâtiment modèle où formation et développement durable ne font qu’un

Annoncé à l’automne 2009, le projet de construction du CFER des Chênes est maintenant réalité. Depuis peu, les quelque 140 élèves et 10 enseignants du CFER ont fièrement pris possession d’un plateau de formation unique en son genre, situé à l’intersection du boulevard Saint-Joseph et de la rue du Cordeau, à Drummondville. L’inauguration du bâtiment a eu lieu aujourd’hui, en présence des dirigeants de Waste Management et de la Commission scolaire des Chênes, des élèves et membres du personnel du CFER, des élus et représentants des différents partenaires concernés.
